Leaving Ontario
Ontario is huge! It took us 3 days to get from Toronto and out of Ontario, via Thunder Bay. The road just keeps going and going… and going, but it’s BEAUTIFUL, particularly between Sault Ste. Marie and Wawa.
In Sudbury, we stopped at the Big Nickel- mostly because this is where my parents grew up and I hadn’t visited since I was about 10 years old.
We of course stopped at the Big Goose in Wawa and checked out the Trading Post there. Next, we headed for Sault Ste. Marie. We ended up stopping at Chippewa Falls, along Highway 17-
we cooked our first dinner here. It’s a great spot to stop, eat, and use the bathroom; however, there is no overnight camping.
We drove about 20 minutes North of here and found a pullover spot on the side of the road. These are quite common in Ontario, just make sure there aren’t signs for not overnight parking. We were able to walk down to the water and enjoy the view and have a drink before climbing into the van for the night.
For the night, we chose Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park. Initially, I had just wanted to see the falls as they had been recommended to me before leaving Ottawa. It worked out that the park was a great stop as we were able to use the great facilities and have a shower I highly recommend at least stopping to view the Falls.
We then spent an extra day in Thunder Bay: after enjoying a great night in a provincial park we had an extra UNPLANNED day in Thunder Bay… long story short- our alternator went on the van. This story is fairly epic and actually deserves it’s own post which I’ll get to.
Next up, the Prairies!
